Ghotul Pillar (Chhatishgarh)
Ghotul Pillar is the symbol of a particular tribal in Bastar region of Chhatishgarh. Ghotul means the youth hostel of the tribal. Ghotul Pillar is made with a long piece of wood with decorative branches at the top and various figures of animals and birds are carved out on this pillar. It is placed at the centre of the youth hostel. Among the mooria or madia tribal of Chhattisgarh, the Ghotul pillar is an inseparable part of their religion and social tradition.

As per the local tradition, the unmarried young boys and girls become members of the Ghotul house. They learn the discipline and tradition of song and dance in this place. The young boys of Ghotul are called ‘chelik’and the girls of Ghotul are called ‘motiari’. In this tradition, there is liberal physical and sexual relationship among the young boys and girls and they decide their future married partner here. The unmarried young boys girls truly mix and dance around this pillar and this is the reason, Verrier Elwyn called it independent and autonomous ‘children republic.’
